How to Pick a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital
The first step in finding and evaluating a long-term acute care hospital is to simply take a tour of the hospital. Observe the attitude of the staff, type of equipment and the cleanliness of the facility.

Ask questions about the backgrounds of the clinical staff. Who exactly will be taking care of you or your family member? Does the hospital have physical therapists, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, clinical dieticians, pharmacists and physicians with specialized training?

During your tour it is also very important to make note of the following:
What is the nurse-to-patient ratio?
Is it a comfortable place? Does it have a clean cafeteria, therapy areas, nursing station, and patient rooms/bathrooms?
Does it promote family education and involvement?

You may also want to speak with a member of the management team to address any other concerns you might have. There is no reason to be nervous about asking all the questions you want. Choosing the best facility for you or your family member is a crucial decision.
